The Land and the Water

The River Tweed and the Eddleston Water formed natural boundaries to the town and have been major influences in the its development over the centuries. Both corn mills and textile mills were powered by the water, which also provided a rich supply of fish.
The surrounding land is also rich in wildlife, while the hills are grazed by hardy black face sheep whose fleece provides the raw material for the textile industry. In the last century many of the hills round Peebles were planted with trees, providing a haven for wildlife.
