The lifestyle of the inhabitants of Peebles has changed dramatically over the last fifty years. Then it was a small market town with three major mills employing a large number of men and women. Today the two remaining mills employ far fewer people. The majority of the townspeople now commute to Edinburgh and beyond to work.

Peebles has a reputation for good schools and attracts many young families from other areas. It is also a popular retirement town.

Whether Gutterbluid (a native), or Stooriefoot (an incomer), the people of Peebles are proud of their town. Although so much has changed within living memory, Peebles remains a small bustling community with a market town atmosphere.
